EBY’S ELECTION GAMBLE: A POLITICAL ADVENTURE OF EPIC PROPORTIONS?

I’m still scratching my head over why British Columbia is heading to the polls on October 24, a full two years ahead of the next scheduled election.

And at a projected cost of more than $50 million!

What exactly was Premier David Eby thinking? Was this a calculated political gamble by the NDP leader?

Or was he simply trying to cash in on the internal divisions tearing the Conservative Party of BC apart?

If that was his strategy, the plot took an unexpected turn.

The moment the snap election was announced, the Conservatives appeared to put their differences aside. Rebels and expellees began returning to the fold, turning a divided party into a more united political force.

Surely, that wasn’t the script Eby and his polling advisers had anticipated!

The 2024 provincial election had left the NDP with an extremely narrow victory.

Perhaps Eby saw the Conservatives’ internal turmoil as a golden opportunity, one that might not come again in the next two years.

Why wait for the scheduled election when the main rival seems busy fighting itself?

But politics has a mischievous habit of turning a strategist’s calculations upside down.

Instead of keeping the Conservatives divided, Eby’s early-election call appears to have helped bring them together.

Worse for the NDP, the latest Ipsos poll cited here puts the Conservatives five percentage points ahead of the NDP:

Conservative Party: 43%

NDP: 38%

Green Party: 11%

Of course, a poll is a snapshot of public opinion, not a verdict delivered at the ballot box.

The real test will come when British Columbians cast their votes.

Still, one question refuses to go away: Was Eby trying to exploit his opponents’ divisions, only to hand them a reason to unite?

And what about the more than $50 million price tag for an election that could have waited another two years?

That is a hefty bill for a political gamble whose outcome remains uncertain.

Whatever the final result, Eby’s decision has turned an otherwise predictable political timeline into a high-stakes adventure in BC politics.

The Premier rolled the dice early.

Now British Columbians will decide whether it was a masterstroke or a very expensive roll of the dice.
