LOVE FOR INDIA INCLUDES THE COURAGE TO QUESTION ITS LEADERS

There is a large group of devoted supporters, both in Canada and in India, who react emotionally whenever the government’s style of governance is criticized. In doing so, they often overlook an important truth: holding a government accountable can itself be an expression of care and commitment to the nation.

When Nobel Laureates Amartya Sen, Abhijit Banerjee, world-renowned economist and former Reserve Bank of India chief Raghuram Rajan, writer Arundhati Roy, and hundreds of other thinkers, writers, journalists, farmers, and professionals in their respective fields criticize the government’s policies, they can’t be branded anti-national. Bhagats, please understand. Blind faith in the leadership is dangerous and divides the nation.

Their views reflect engagement, not disloyalty. Dismissing all criticism as hostility toward the country weakens democratic dialogue.

Unquestioning loyalty to any leader is risky. A healthy nation depends on debate, scrutiny, and the willingness to listen to differing perspectives. True patriotism is not blind faith; it is the desire to see the country improve, even when that requires uncomfortable conversations.
