OLYMPICS: A BILLION-DOLLAR CIRCUS IN A WORLD OF CHAOS

While wars rage, poverty spreads, and basic necessities like clean water and functional hospitals remain a distant dream for many, the world pauses for the Olympics—a colossal billion-dollar spectacle.

This year, the show unfolds in Paris, under a sweltering sun, amidst scandals and drone spying.

The Olympics have become a grand stage where wealthy nations flaunt their sporting prowess, generating astronomical profits for the sports industry, developers, builders, and suppliers.

For these nations, the event is a golden opportunity to showcase their superiority, quite literally, as they often haul the lion’s share of gold, silver, and bronze pieces of metal.

The cost of participation is staggering, accessible only to those with deep pockets. Advanced technology, pricey equipment, and high-cost training are the tickets to the winner’s circle, leaving less affluent countries to struggle for a spot on the podium. These nations return home with few medals, having spent vast sums just to compete.

While rich countries bask in the glow of the Olympic torch, poorer nations could use their scarce resources for essential needs like food, healthcare, and education. Instead, they are swept into the costly endeavour of merely participating, driven by the dream of sporting glory.

Economists increasingly argue that the supposed benefits of hosting the Olympics are overblown, if not entirely mythical. Many host countries are left with massive debts and burdensome maintenance costs long after the flame has been extinguished.

Perhaps it’s time to reconsider.

They say the show must go on, but in this case, maybe it’s time to bring down the curtain.

  1. The Olympics are so absurd, dangerous to the environment and the planet and really a sales campaign for US brands like Nike, etc. Also if they wouldn’t allow Russia to compete, why allow Israel.

    1. Thanks for joining me in condemning the Olympics. Indeed, it is absurd, unethical and undemocratic to stage this show . That is indeed a very valid point why stop Russia and allow Israel to get into the Olympics.
