A floor lamp, a desk, a speaker, a couple of mugs, and a clipped cord. These items sit on the sidewalks on the way to my morning walk, abandoned for several days. No taker so far. Then there are scattered books, shoes, framed paintings, toys, pans, pots and plates, and many more I often see, especially in summer, people put on the sidewalks with a sign “for free.” Some are picked up. Others? Is this a sign of affluence or abundance? Is that the era of garage sales receding? Or is this the new version of the environmental mantra “reduce, reuse, recycle?”
