NDP Has Relevancy in Canadian Politics

Avi Lewis has emerged as the new leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, elected by nearly 1,000 party delegates at a convention in Winnipeg over the weekend. His arrival comes at a critical moment for the NDP, still reeling from a bruising defeat in the last federal election and facing serious questions about its relevance in today’s political landscape.

Yet, writing off the NDP would be premature. As a Left-leaning force, the party remains an essential counterweight in Canadian politics, offering a social and economic balance between the Conservative Party of Canada on the Right and the Liberal Party of Canada, which, lately under PM Carney, has itself edged rightward on fiscal policy and refugee and immigration issues.

As for Jagmeet Singh, much political dust, and not a little dirt, has been thrown his way. Still, beneath the criticism lies a record that shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. Singh carved out a place in history with his focus on social justice and advocacy for the everyday needs of Canadians, especially on dental plans and medical concerns for the poor.

In politics, defeats are loud—but contributions often speak more quietly, and last longer.
