ISRAEL’S ONSLAUGHT ON GAZA: SILENCE, INDIFFERENCE, AND DIPLOMATIC TIPTOEING

Israel’s relentless onslaught on Gaza has killed more than 62,000 people so far—half of them women and children—and reduced 70% of the strip to rubble.

And yet, polls reveal a chilling truth: a majority of Israelis remain either indifferent to Palestinian suffering or openly supportive of it. The dehumanization of Palestinians has become so normalized in Israeli society that compassion itself feels like a radical act.

Only now, faint cracks are beginning to show in this wall of indifference inside Israel. But worldwide, the tragedy has slipped into the background noise—a genocide streamed like a daily weather update, reported, shrugged at, and moved on from.

Canada, meanwhile, walks on diplomatic eggshells. Its response to the ongoing annihilation of Gaza has been a slow shuffle—careful not to upset Netanyahu or his indispensable ally, the United States. Instead of taking an independent, moral stand, Ottawa hides behind caution.

Prime Minister Carney and Foreign Minister Anita Anand must drop the diplomatic choreography and act with urgency. This is not about geopolitics, but about human lives. The Palestinians are not bargaining chips; they are fellow human beings caught in a catastrophe the world is watching in real time.

  1. Thanks, Promod Bhai for your column on Gaza. I hope it makes a difference.

You are correct in your assessment that the dehumanization of Palestinians has become normalized in Israeli society. Israelis do not see Palestinians as human beings.

Last week, the UN-backed IPC Famine Review Committee confirmed the existence of famine in Gaza*. *This is not a natural disaster — it is mass murder and intentional starvation.

Trucks loaded with food and medicine are waiting just across the border. But Israel won’t let them in. Our leaders are still silent. We must continue to demand meaningful action to stop Israel’s genocide.
