“Boys Don’t Cry.”

Yes, they do. And they should. Crying isn’t a “feminine” thing that men should fear or suppress.

Take a moment from the recent Democratic Convention: Tim Walz’s son burst into tears as he proudly declared, “That is my dad!” It was raw, unfiltered emotion—something we should celebrate, not stifle.

Men and women, boys and girls, are all wired the same way when it comes to feelings. Telling boys, “don’t cry” does more harm than good. It’s neither macho nor mature to bottle up genuine emotions.

Moreover, it is not masculinity nor a sign of weakness when men or boys shed tears in their authentic emotions.

So, let’s drop the outdated notion that tears are a sign of weakness. Because sometimes, letting it out is the strongest thing one can do.
