Fascism is a political system led by a dictator who exerts complete control over a nation. To maintain this power, a fascist leader suppresses opposition and criticism, fostering a false sense of aggressive nationalism and patriotism. In such an environment, racism and xenophobia are encouraged.
This describes a typical scenario of a nation under fascist rule. However, in the contemporary world, some nations exhibit authoritarian tendencies despite maintaining a democratic facade. These governments, while outwardly democratic or socialist, possess essential elements of fascist regimes.
In this modern version of fascism, the trappings of democracy are used to disguise authoritarian control. Fear is used liberally to silence dissenting voices. Bureaucratic and democratic institutions are restrained and corrupted, with manipulated elections predetermined in favour of those in power. The majority’s religious sentiments are exploited to suppress minorities, and the media, often bribed, threatened, or intimidated, acts as a government mouthpiece.
Social media networks are employed to manufacture and distribute false information and propaganda, both domestically and globally.
Key democratic institutions—judiciary, election commissions, media, and statistical agencies—are essential for maintaining an authoritative, functional, dynamic, and accountable democracy. When any or all of these systems are compromised, corrupted, or abused, democracy collapses, paving the way for fascism.
